colourfulbananas asked: Hi, I'm a junior in High School trying to figure out what I want to do at university, and where to apply. I'm currently doing a Java programming course in IB and really enjoy it.
My question is how math driven does computer science get later on, like at university level or 'real world' stuff?
Right now it doesn't seem to require really much math (other than logic, which right now is pretty easy...I have a feeling it gets harder though XP) but I've heard from numerous people that computer science takes lots of higher level math, but then again, these are the people who said I'd need to be taking the highest math course to do the programming course I'm doing, and I'm doing the middle math course and I'm just fine, so I'm a little uneasy taking their word on this.
Any information would be most appreciated :)DF: Overall, direct application of higher level, college level such as Calculus BC (I’m sorry, I was educated in with AP) or multi-variable calc, isn’t too common on the college level. That being said, discrete math is helpful, and math, as a subject overall, helps train the mind in logical thinking, in my opinion. Basically, a strong understanding of Algebra, geometry and some precalc will take you a long way, but my understanding of it (remember, I live in Korea so the universities are a bit different) is that if you don’t take calculus I and II in high school, it’ll be a required course in college to major in Computer science.
